The Tale of Guardian Bells

In the motorcycling community, these small bells, often referred to as Gremlin Bells, Guardian Bells, or Spirit Bells, serve as a kind of talisman for riders. Much like a pendant or image of St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, these bells are believed to offer protection during journeys.

How the Bell Works

According to legend, malevolent spirits lurk along roadways, seeking motorcycles to attach themselves to and cause trouble. These spirits, often blamed for mysterious and hard-to-diagnose mechanical issues (commonly known as “gremlins”), are said to be the source of many problems for motorcycles and their riders.

The Gremlin Bell is believed to ward off these spirits by trapping them inside the bell. The constant ringing drives the spirits away, forcing them to release their hold and return to the road in search of another unsuspecting rider without a bell.

The Rules of the Bell

There are a few guidelines to ensure the Guardian Bell works effectively:

  • Gifted, Not Bought:

The bell must be given to a rider by a loved one. The legend states that the bell’s power is “activated” by the goodwill of the giver, especially if they are also a rider.

  • Placement:

The bell should be attached to the lowest part of the motorcycle’s frame. Since gremlins grab onto bikes from the road, the low-hanging bell should be the first thing they encounter, capturing them immediately. A zip-tie is generally preferred for secure attachment, as safety wire can cause rust and scratches.

  • Transfer Upon Sale:

If a bike with a bell is sold, the bell should be removed and kept by the original recipient. It can be transferred to another bike or given to the new rider face-to-face as a gesture of goodwill.

  • Goodwill and Karma:

A bell given without genuine goodwill loses its protective power. If a Gremlin Bell is stolen, it will no longer ward off spirits, and the thief will inherit the gremlins. The bell’s power relies on the positive intent behind the gift, and karma will handle the rest.

  • One Bell Per Bike:

Following these rules, one Guardian Bell is sufficient to protect a bike. Ride safely, knowing you are cherished!
